My Personal Take on New Moon the movie

The long agonising wait which basically started right after I walked out of the movie theater last year watching Twilight is finally over. The longing for New Moon grew bigger and bigger especially after I got myself all 4 books of the Twilight saga. Yesterday, Saturday Nov 21 at 10.30am, the wait was finally over. At least for me!

Let me explain first why I am writing what I am writing. I fell in love with twilight saga the moment I watched the trailer for Twilight the movie on tv. At that time, I have never even heard of the books but somehow the scene of Edward confronting Bella in the woods about him being a vampire just tug my heart. I think my heart might have even skipped a beat or two!

Now for New Moon. Director Chris Weitz were lucky to have been chosen to direct the movie with such big budget and an already well known movie with HUGE followers. He doesn't have to be afraid of a flopped movie. Twi-hards are not going to let that happen. No matter how hollow the movie is.

So on my part. I am not loving the movie ... yet! As awesome as the clothes everyone wore, the movie IMO lack the 1 thing that is the essence of the twilight saga that is LOVE. I cried my eyes bucket when I read the book. All 3 times of it especially when Edward decided that leaving Bella is the best way in making sure she is safe and then later when Charlie told Alice what happened to Bella during their absence. When they showed the part in the woods, I waited and waited and then .... nothing. I personally feel that the scene was made in a hurry. Well, actually I feel the whole movie was made in a hurry and somehow Chris Weitz (CW) forgot to add emotions in the movie.

There are a few things in the movie that made me cringe.

1) is of course the lack of emotions. CW practically ignored facial expressions. Watch for it when you go see the movie especially between Edward/Bella and Jacob/Bella. The other person's expression just doesn't seem to connect and it was so frustrating.

2) is when they are with the Volturi and Alice showed Aro the future of Bella as vampire. Bella and Edward running in the woods. Boy! Was it cheesy or what??? Ewww.

3) is the fact that a lot of the important scripts are taken straight out of New Moon's book word-for-word. It made me feel that somehow Melissa Rosernberg the scriptwriter either hates CW or she was told to write it differently and take the wordings out of the book so it would help director CW whom I doubt read the book before he directed it.

4) almost forgot about the part of Bella in the woods after Edward left her. We are supposed to feel her pain but CW's directing with a spinning camera made me sick. Literally.

The only reason I understood the movie is because I have read the book 3 times. It helps in filling up the emptiness of the movie. The only reason I cried a little bit when watching it is because I know what happened. If I had watched the movie without reading the book, I seriously doubt I would get the feelings, the emotions, the heart-wrenching, the fear and everything else that (should)come with the movie.

Saying all that, will I buy the dvd and watch it again? Hell yeah! What choice do I have being a twilight fan but, have the whole collection of the books and dvds? Who knows maybe the movie is better the second or third time I watch it. But 1 thing for sure, it would be very interesting if Catherine Hardwicke were to make a different version of New Moon movie. Maybe I would feel more connected?

If you are a twihard but haven't watch New Moon yet, do go see it for yourself but really try not to think so much about the book. Just go with the flow and let's hope that Eclipse would be better.

Movie Review : The Happening

I finally got my wish granted that is watching The Happening at the movie theater rather than waiting for it to come out on dvd which would be another 4-5 months. I could not wait that long. Sometimes I just dont have the patient. Only sometimes ok?

Anyway, last Saturday we decided to go watch it. We both are an early riser (which may surprise my x-colleagues since I was always late for work. ooppss!) so I took the opportunity to shower, wash my hair and get my hair done. After having my coffee of course. We were supposed to watch the 10.25am show but I was hardly half-way done with my hair so it was pushed forward to the 11am show. But by then he was too engrossed on the computer that we didnt leave the house until 11.10. In the end we went for the 11.30am show. Which was ok too. And! This time we didnt drive. We walked to the cinema. It doesnt matter that the cinema is only 10min walk (my walking), its walking nevertheless. With my red sundress (with smocking), white hand bag and white 3in sandal. ;) Sorry, Iv got to mention about my new red sundress that I bought. I love, love, love my new dress. hehehe.

Back to the movie review (which is the reason for this post). I have mixed feeling about this movie. I love M.N. Shyamalan but maybe I shouldnt have hoped too much. But then again, this is the guy behind the Sixth Sense! And unfortunately also the guy behind Lady in The Water! The Happening sounds like it has a good storyline. It gets scarier and scarier that one time I had to cover my eyes because I knew what was happening and I couldnt watch it. There were also a few scenes that was so unexpected that they just scared the shit out of me. Im not kidding. I thought his movies has always been child-friendly. This one is definitely not. At all! So please DO NOT watch this with your kids. Unfortunately the suspense ended too abruptly and all seems to be back to normal. Just like that. No explanation, no solution, no nothing. Until it happens again in France and then THE END.

Watching this movie is so frustrating. Its short, I tell you that. In all I think its no more than 90min. It feels like he was in a hurry to finish the movie that everything was cut short. Im not sure whats wrong with him but he seems to be losing his touch. It could have been a very good movie but somewhere, somehow, someone, just blew it. Big time. I wouldnt really recommend anybody to watch this movie at the theater unless they're a die-hard fan of M.N.Shyamalan. Like me. Wait for it to come out on dvd.

Long Weekend and Jumper

Another long weekend and this time its for President's Day. It seems like this year, a lot of holidays fall on Monday and since Michael works with the government, it means that he gets ALL of them. Some of you (esp in Msia) may start saying, "whts the big deal?". Well, it IS a big deal since here not everybody gets off on ALL holidays. Most companies only close for Xmas, Thanksgiving and July 4th (plus a couple others) and they have floating holidays where you have to choose whc holidays you want to be off and which you dont which means that you have to come to work.

Anyways, we decided to watch the movie Jumper despite the not-so-good reviews that we'v been hearing. I mean, after watching Cloverfield, im up to watching anything! :P It turns out to be not as bad as the reviews say. It's a bit childish-like movie but nevertheless still entertaining.
One other thing that I like about going to the cinema to watch a movie is that I get to know what movies would be coming out soon. So far Im excited about Hellboy II, Prince Caspian The Chronicles of Narnia (yes i love Narnia!), Indiana Jones and Angelina Jolie's new movie Wanted.

But is there any M.Night Shyamalan fan out there? I know I am. Huge fan of his movies to the point that I think I tend to be biased when it comes to his movies. At least thats what Michael told me. He knows that at a mere mentioning of M.Night Shyamalan, id be telling him, "oh we'r definitely gonna see that!" in a heart beat. Dont care wht its about or whos in it. All I care is that if it comes from the him then I must watch it. Anyways, his new movie is called The Happening and its coming out on June 13th this year.

Michael told me that we should wait for it to come out on dvd (gasp!). I dont think I can wait that long. From my past experiences, his movies usually take a long time before they finally come out on dvd and I cannot (read:would not!) wait that long. Lagipun sini mana dvd ciplak bukan macam kat msia, kan? Trust me, Im definitely going to the cinema to watch it. With him of course! ;)

Long Weekend and Cloverfield

Winter in SoCal is not really winter. I kid you not. 2 weeks ago we were having spring-like season and then wham! it gets really cold. Not that kind of cold where you'l get snow though. Its the other kind that comes with the rain. The temp now is around 58F or 13 C and it will go down much lower later at night.

Anyways, we decided to watch the Cloverfield last sunday. Personally, I found it excrutiatingly painful to watch. Yup. I didn like it at all. Now, before anybody starts jumping the gun on me, let me remind you again that this is MY own personal opinion. Other people might find it interesting and im not 1 of them. Im sure most of you remember the movie The Blair Witch Project? Remember that the whole movie was taken using the camcorder? Well, the same goes to Cloverfield. The first 25min of the movie was nothing else but the characters filming their morning and day out and continued with the planning of the farewell party.

Im not going to tell you the whole story but here are among the things that just dont make sense to me even for a hollywood movie standard:

1) if you were being chased/attacked/mauled by aliens/animal/something, would you still be carrying ur camera?

2) after no.1 above, can you still climb up and down 59floors (!) to help a girl tht your friend likes/loves even after she came to the party with another guy and you didn even know if shes alive?

3) hell after no. 1 would you still wanna do no. 2 rather than straight to the evacuation place??

4) the said girl was found with a re-bar sticking out of her chess and after much difficulty in freeing her fr it and getting her out of the building (bleeding and all), she could suddenly run like she was not even hurt.

5) the heli that they were in crashed. the pilot who was wearing the helmet died but ALL 3 of them miraculously survived.

So there you go, thats my take on the movie. If you like the movie, do share why ok?

On another note, both dvds that arrived in the mail from blockbuster.com turned out to be un-playable. We thought our player was bad but luckily we still have another movie with us so we know for sure that it was those dvds rather than the player. ;)
